SOLANO COUNTY — In this Caltrans News Flash, we spend a night with Caltrans Construction as crews demolish an entire bridge above Interstate-80 between dusk to dawn. The one-night-only project must be completed in time to reopen the main highway between Sacramento and San Francisco to motorists before morning.
The demolition of the I-80 Midway Bridge, originally built in 1965, clears the way for construction of a new Midway Bridge, which will meet new seismic safety standards. The Midway Bridge is just one of several Caltrans bridge projects currently in construction in the Bay Area.
As these structures are rebuilt, Caltrans is doing its part to maintain California’s infrastructure which includes our state’s highways and bridges.
