OAKLAND — Express Lanes are designated freeway lanes that give solo drivers the choice to pay a toll for a more reliable trip. Drivers can choose to use the Express Lanes by paying the current price to access the lane depending on the level of traffic.
Express Lanes are operated by regional transportation agencies under Caltrans oversight and tolls are collected electronically with a FasTrak® toll tag linked to a pre-funded account.
In the Bay Area, most of the Express Lanes are free for carpools, vanpools, buses, motorcycles and other toll-exempt vehicles. Outside posted hours of operation, Express Lanes are open to general traffic at no charge and have no requirements for FasTrak® or vehicle occupancy.
In all, the Bay Area has plans for 550-miles of Express Lanes by 2035.
