SANTA ANA — After experiencing emergency engine failure, a private plane crash-lands in a ball of fire on Interstate 405 in Orange County, one of the busiest highways in the nation. In this Caltrans News Flash, find out how Caltrans responds in this kind of chaotic event.

The department’s Transportation Management Center coordinates a rapid response to the scene, and a traffic management team is deployed to work with maintenance crews to quickly establish detours and prevent secondary traffic incidents from occurring.

Public information officers conduct live media interviews and work with partner agencies to inform the public about the incident and encourage motorists to avoid the area. Executives and others communicate with local, state, and federal agencies to coordinate efforts and ensure the traffic lanes reopen before rush-hour traffic begins.

Viewers get an inside and close-up look at the quick response, teamwork and communication needed to respond to a major accident. This crash is only one example. Caltrans employees regularly respond around the clock to emergency situations such as fires, mud slides, floods, and major traffic collisions.
