SACRAMENTO – Sacramento artists Hennessy Christophel and Sofia Lacin spent months working like modern-day Michelangelos to create one of the largest murals ever painted on a Caltrans structure.

The sprawling 70,000-square-foot mural on the underside of the U.S. Highway 50 viaduct near downtown Sacramento features a colorful canopy of 20 species of birds, monarch butterflies, dragon flies, bumblebees and trees reflecting the four seasons. The privately funded mural project brightens the once-drab environment for thousands of shoppers visiting the popular year-round Sunday Farmers Market.

In this Caltrans News Flash, Public Information Officer Gilbert Mohtes-Chan interviews the artists and describes how public art advances Caltrans' sustainability efforts by promoting livable public spaces at transportation corridors.
