Caltrans and Federal Highway Administration Seek Public Input On Environmental Review Process

SACRAMENTO - Caltrans and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) invite public comment on a proposal to continue delegating certain federal responsibilities that streamline the environmental review process without removing protections to Caltrans.
The FHWA authorization simplifies and speeds the review and approval of environmental documents prepared for transportation projects. This reduces the number of steps in the environmental review and approval process without reducing or affecting National Environmental Policy Act protection. These time savings allow Caltrans to approve more projects and deliver them quickly.
Since June 7, 2007, FHWA has authorized Caltrans to perform these responsibilities through a memorandum of understanding. The authorization was renewed in 2010 and 2013 and is set to expire on June 7, 2016.
