Caltrans Transportation Planning Grant Program

Senate Bill 1 Planning Grants 

Caltrans is pleased to announce the release of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2017-18 Senate Bill (SB) 1 Sustainable Communities and Adaptation Planning Grant awards. Caltrans received a statewide total of 157 Sustainable Communities Competitive and Adaptation Planning grant applications, requesting $44.6 million in grants.  Of these applications, 64 transportation planning projects were selected for grant awards, totaling $19.38 million.  Award and Non-Award lists for each grant are provided below.  Grant applicants are encouraged to contact Caltrans district staff (below) to request feedback for unsuccessful applications and receive technical assistance with application development.

It is envisioned that these planning grants will provide much needed funding to support regional sustainable communities strategies and ultimately achieve the State's greenhouse gas reductions targets of 40 and 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 and 2050, respectively.

Please contact the appropriate Caltrans district staff (below) if there are questions about developing a competitive grant application for the next cycle anticipated in early January 2018.

Anticipated Schedule for Fiscal Year 2018-19 Transportation Planning Grants (i.e., Sustainable Communities, Strategic Partnerships, and Adaptation Planning)

  • Early January 2018 – Release Grant Guides and call for applications
  • February 23, 2018 – Grant applications due
  • March 2018 – Application evaluation period
  • May 2018 – Management approval and release grant announcements
  • February 1, 2019 – Non-MPO/RTPA final due date for contract packages
  • May 1, 2019 – MPO/RTPA final due date for programming funds in Overall Work Programs (OWPs) and OWP Agreements.   
  • February 28, 2021 – ALL grant tasks must be completed
  • April 30, 2021 ALL final invoices must be submitted
