CALTRANS COMPLETES WIDENING PROJECT ON STATE ROUTE 99 THROUGH BAKERSFIELD

BAKERSFIELD – The daily commute for Kern County motorists is going to take less time and be safer thanks to a just-completed Caltrans project that expanded State Route 99 from six lanes to eight lanes through Bakersfield.

“This project is about making the quality of life better for the people of this region,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. “The new lanes will reduce traffic congestion, and that means the air quality here will improve. People won’t be stuck in traffic as frequently, so they’ll have more time to spend with their friends and families.”

The South Bakersfield Project added one new lane in each direction on SR-99 from State Route 119 to the Wilson Road overcrossing. The average daily traffic volume along this section can reach as high as 140,000.

A new auxiliary lane constructed for the southbound Panama Lane exit will make it easier and safer for motorists to exit the highway. The project also includes a concrete median barrier and wider 10-foot inside shoulders which give motorists a safe place to pull over during an emergency.

The $34 million project received $31 million from Proposition 1B, the 2006 voter-approved transportation bond. To date, more than $17 billion in Proposition 1B funds have been put to work statewide for transportation purposes.
