Prepare Preliminary Drainage Report

Narrative

After completion of geometric base maps and hydrology studies, the Hydraulics Unit prepares a preliminary Drainage Report for design use and for transmittal to the Division of Structures (and to the FHWA when appropriate). The report provides an overall picture of drainage requirements. It is used to identify drainage problems that may affect the freeway profiles and to develop preliminary drainage cost estimates.

Narrative

Narrative

Prepare Site Data Submittal for Pumping Plants

Narrative

If pumping plants are required, the district and the Division of Structures share responsibility for design. The district designs the collection system (which empties into the storage box) and the outfall facilities. The Division of Structures prepares the contract plans for the pumping station, storage box, discharge box, and appurtenant equipment.

Prepare Preliminary Stage Construction and Traffic Handling Plans

Narrative

Construction staging plans are prepared to show the sequence of operation, work to be performed, materials to be used, and the routes to be utilized by traffic during each construction phase.

Traffic handling plans show how the traffic is to be routed and maintained within the limits of the project. The plans also show long term closures of lanes and ramps, detours, and the number of traffic lanes available for public traffic.

Narrative

The Traffic Unit is responsible for providing PS&E for traffic signals, highway lighting, signing, and striping. Coordination between the Project Development Unit and the appropriate traffic function is essential.

Narrative

Design for electrical, signing, and striping is not restricted to permanent facilities. Many detours, ramp closures, and other elements of the construction staging plans or Traffic Management Plans may require temporary lighting, signals, signing, and striping. The plan elements should be discussed with the appropriate Traffic Units.

Narrative

Local entities may be Caltrans' partners in developing drainage design, making sanitary sewer adjustments and complying with flood control district requirements. Mutual benefits may be realized from cooperative projects where State drainage is discharged into local entity facilities.

Prepare Typical Cross Sections

Narrative

Typical cross sections serve two purposes: (1) they show the geometric dimensions in relation to the construction layout lines, and (2) they depict the pavement structural sections. The structural sections consist of a combination of pavement, base, sub-base, and permeable materials.

By now, geometrics have been determined, traffic data have been developed, and the Materials Report has been completed. Typical cross sections are now prepared.

Prepare Authorizing Report for a Cooperative Agreement

Narrative

The Streets and Highways Code (Sections 114, 130 and 6500) and Government Code, Section 14529.11, authorizes entering into Cooperative Agreements with cities, counties, and other public entities. Cooperative Agreements are normally authorized during the project approval process. If the need for a Cooperative Agreement is determined at a later date, authorization for the agreement is obtained by preparing either a Cooperative Agreement Report or including it with other project revisions in a Supplemental Project Report.
