Webinars
In 2008-2010 the Landscape Architecture Program sponsored a series of webinars focused upon applying recent roadside related Landscape Architecture research to real-world Caltrans projects. Benefits included project cost savings, improved project delivery, and reductions in climate change impact.
Recycled Products

TIRE DERIVED PRODUCTSPresented November 22, 2010 Caltrans partnered with CalRecycle (formerly the California Integrated Waste Management Board) to present a webinar promoting awareness of tire-derived products to Caltrans landscape design professionals and other Caltrans staff involved with roadside design. The webinar focused on products that might be useful in the roadside environment and includes rubber weed abatement mats, rubber sidewalks, playground surfacing, artificial turf, tactile warning strips and site furnishings. Recycled materials like tire derived products play an important role in developing more sustainable California highways.

Topsoil Webinar
|
Management of Topsoil Stockpiles for Use in Native Re-vegetationPresented February 23, 2008 Dr. Keith Vogelsang of Indiana University presents research on the benefits of stripping, stockpiling, and reapplying topsoil. This presentation also includes information on proper methods to stockpile soil and the benefits of mycorrhiza in establishing effective, sustainable long-term vegetation. |

Lean Green Highways Webinar
|
Lean Green HighwaysPresented December 11, 2008 Learn the benefits presented by low impact development treatments to manage stormwater runoff, including cost savings, improved aesthetics, public stakeholder support, and satisfaction of permit requirements. Tools discussed include biofiltration strips and swales, willow pole planting, brush layering, and compost blankets. Presented by Greg Balzer & Pete Riegelhuth. |

Vegetation Attacks Erosion Webinar
|
Vegetation Attacks ErosionPresented December 4, 2008 The webinar explores the benefits of using traditional highway roadside planting design concepts to control erosion and manage stormwater runoff quality. Presented by Dr. Brent Hallock, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. |

Native Grass Sod Webinar
|
Native Grass SodPresented November 13, 2008 Native grass sod has shown promise as an effective method to control erosion. Unlike traditional seeded approaches, native grass sod provides 100% immediate soil protection. Doug Brown, Senior Landscape Architect at Caltrans presents research performed by Montana State University and the Western Transportation Institute. Included are methods to successfully grow and plant native grass sod. Common design concerns are addressed, including availability, cost, identifying appropriate species, and the best time and place to specify the use of native grass sod. |
