District 3 - Project Map

Camino Safety Improvements

Near Placerville from Still Meadows Road to 0.1 mile east of Upper Carson Road. The project proposes to install a concrete median barrier, widen outside shoulders, and install several acceleration/deceleration lanes to decrease potential vehicle conflicts. In addition, a new undercrossing will be constructed to allow access between the north and south side of Highway 50.

Vertical Clearance for Permit Vehicles

This project proposes to raise six overcrossing (OC) structures and replace the roadway structural section beneath one underpass (UP) structure and two overcrossing (OC) structures to meet vertical clearance requirements for permit vehicles. The required minimum vertical clearance is 16 feet 6 inches. Currently most of the bridges identified have vertical clearances of 15 feet 6 inches or less.

Hwy 193 Newcastle Relignment

This realignment project project will improve the radius of the roadway curves, increase sight distance, add paved shoulder width, and provide clear recovery zones.

Sac 5 Road Rehabilitation Project

This comprehensive corridor project will rehabilitate Interstate 5 (I-5) in Sacramento County from Beach Lake Bridge at Morrison Creek (PM 13.0) to the American River Bridge (PM 24.9). This was a G13 SHOPP Contingency project programmed in the 18/19 Fiscal Year (FY). With the passage of SB1, this project has been accelerated to be delivered in 17/18 FY and go to construction in 2018.

The proposed work includes:

  • Mainline and all ramps/connectors will be rehabilitated with a 40 year service life pavements.
  • Casilada Way Pedestrian Over-Crossing (POC) will be replaced.
  • Pedestrian ramps and sidewalks throughout the corridor will be brought into compliance with current ADA standards.
  • Seven ramps will be widened for installation of ramp meters, maintenance vehicle pullouts, and bus/carpool preferential lanes.
  • Both mainline and ramps will be widened to add the proposed auxiliary/transition lanes between Pocket Road and Florin Road.
  • ITS Elements (in conjunction with Fiber Optic Project 4F450 – CMS, Vehicle Classification, etc.) will be installed.
  • Ancillary facilities to be replaced or upgraded include drainage systems, overhead signs, lighting, pumping plants, approach slabs, guard rail, and safety barriers.

    Hwy 49 Rehabilitation Project

    This project proposes to rehabilitate the existing pavement. The proposed work includes: improving operational features, upgrading pedestrian facilities, replacing or relocating associated electrical facilities (including a new traffic signal), rehabilitating the existing drainage facilities, widening shoulders at designated places, and providing Class II bike lanes.

    "Y" to Cascade Road

    The project will collect and treat storm water runoff as part of the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program (EIP). The project is partially located within the City of South Lake Tahoe (CSLT) on Route 89 between the "Y" and Cascade Road. The first 1.1 miles of the project is a 4 lane conventional highway with a continuous two way left turn lane. The remainder of the project is a 2 lane conventional highway.

    State Route 16: Capay/Esparto Improvement - Collision Severity Reduction Project

    In Capay, this project will benefit the travelers by improving the sight distance and providing a consistent shoulder width. In Esparto, this project will benefit users by improving pedestrian visibility, reducing the intersection crossing distance for pedestrians, upgrading pedestrian facilities to be in accordance with ADA requirements.

    U.S. Highway 50 from "Y" Intersection with State Highway 89 to Trout Creek Bridge

    Bus/Carpool Lanes Phase 1

    This project (Phase 1) will create approximately 18.8 miles of bus/carpool lanes on I-5 in the Sacramento area, from 0.7 miles north of South Reach Beach Lake Bridge 24-347 to Route 50. Phase 2 will be designed and constructed as a separate project at a later date and will construct approximately 6.8 miles of bus/carpool lanes from 0.2 mile south of Beach Lake Bridge 24-262 to 0.7 mile north of South Reach Beach Lake Bridge 24-347. One environmental document will cover the Phase 1 and Phase 2 project limits.

    Placer Interstate 80-State Highway 65 Interchange Improvement Project

    This project will focus on alleviating traffic congestion on the interchange between Interstate 80 and State Highway 65 in Placer county through the following improvements:

    • Construct a third lane on northbound Highway 65 will be added from I-80 to Pleasant Grove Boulevard.
    • Widen and modify the northbound and southbound ramps at the Highway 65/ Galleria Boulevard/Stanford Ranch Interchange by adding protected left turn pockets and signalizing the northbound off-ramp.

    Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project

    The Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project (KBCCIP) is a $44 million initiative to revitalize Kings Beach through storm water management programs, fresh and new streetscape designs and traffic-calming measures. It includes State Highway 28 from Chipmunk Street to the junction with State Highway 267.

    State Highway 70 Safety Improvement Project

    The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is proposing a safety improvement project on Highway 70 in Yuba County near Marysville between Laurellen Road and the South Honcut Creek Bridge. There have been a higher number of fatal collisions along this section of highway compared to the statewide average, qualifying these locations for safety improvements. The proposed improvements are expected to reduce the collision rates at these locations.

    State Highway 20 Colusa Maintenance Project

    Constructed in the 1950s, this one-mile stretch of State Highway 20 between Butte Vista Drive and Market Street requires extensive maintenance. The pavement cross slopes no longer meet today’s highway standards. The drainage system needs improvements to avoid constant maintenance issues. Some sections of the highway lack sidewalks for pedestrians.

    Placerville U.S. Highway 50 Pavement Preservation Project

    This is a Highway Maintenance (HM) Pavement Preservation Project in El Dorado County located along U.S. Highway 50 from post mile 15.4 to pos mile 18.8 (in and near Placerville from Weber Creek Bridge to Carson Road Overcrossing).

    The work includes cold plane AC pavement followed by placing rubberized hot mix asphalt-gap graded (RHMA-G), placement of new shoulder backing, removing and replacing existing traffic loops, removing and replacing traffic stripes, removing and replacing metal beam guardrail and adjusting guardrail.

    Yolo Interstate 5 RHMA Overlay Project

    This is an SB 1 funded project located on Interstate 5 in Yolo County. The limit of the work will be from post mile 10.5 to post mile 26.0 along Interstate 5 at five interchange locations within affected ramps only.

    The project proposes to repair or replace the existing deteriorated or damaged open-graded asphalt concrete followed by an overlay of rubberized hot mix asphalt, replace AC dikes and AC over-drains that are deteriorated, replace damaged AC shoulders with dig-outs, and replace traffic pavement striping and markings within the project limits.

    Sacramento U.S. Highway 50 Pavement Overlay

    This is a Highway Maintenance (HM) Pavement Preservation Project in Sacramento County located along U.S. Highway 50 from post mile 12.1 to post mile 23.1 (from 0.3 mile west of Sunrise Boulevard to the El Dorado County line).

    The work includes cold plane AC pavement followed by placing rubberized hot-mix asphalt-gap graded (RHMA-G) on the HOV lane from postmile 12.1 to postmile 14.2. From postmile 14.2 to postmile 23.1, cold plane AC pavement and rubberized hot mix asphalt-open graded (RHMA-O). In addition, placement of new shoulder backing, remove and replace existing traffic loops, remove and replace traffic stripes, remove and replace metal beam guardrail and adjust guardrail.

    This is a Highway Maintenance project located on U.S. Highway 50 in El Dorado County. Project limits begin from the west end of Sawmill Undercrossing (post mile 28.8) and end to the west of South Fork American River Bridge (post mile 38.8). The proposed project will overlay the existing roadway with 0.10' of rubberized hot mix asphalt. Local road approaches will be cold planed and repaved with hot mix asphalt.

The project scope will rehabilitate a total of 22 culverts and 13 corrugated steel pipe (CSP) down drains.

    Interstate 80 Sacramento/Yolo County Ramp Metering

    This project will widen ramps, install amps meters, California Highway Patrol (CHP) Enforcement and Maintenance Vehicle Pullout areas on Interstate 80 in Sacramento and Yolo Counties at various locations. Ramp metering will help reduce traffic congestion on the freeway system, minimize vehicle delays and reduce traffic accidents. All ramp locations in this project are listed in the Caltrans District 3 Ramp Meter Development Plan 2013 (December 2013).

    Interstate 80 Drainage Restoration

    The project is located on Interstate 80 (I-80) in Placer County near Secret Town from the Secret Town Overcrossing (OC) to the Gold Run Rest Area. The project proposes to rehabilitate the deteriorated and damaged portion of the existing roadway drainage systems (culverts, down drains, etc.). There are 44 culverts that are scheduled for rehabilitation in this project.

    State Route 99 Live Oak Rehabilitation

    The project is located in and near the City of Live Oak on State Route (SR) 99 in Sutter County from Post Mile 39.4 to 41.0. The project proposes to rehabilitate SR 99 to a 40-year pavement life. In addition, the project entails modifying the drainage systems. Complete Street enhancements will be integrated by providing bicycle and pedestrian facilities. Crosswalks, curbs, gutters, sidewalks and driveways will be upgraded. Curb ramps will be upgraded to current American with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Traffic signals will be upgraded at Pennington Road and Elm Street.

    Interstate 80 Pavement Improvement

    This Capital Preventive Maintenance (CAPM) project proposes to preserve and extend the life of the existing pavement to improve ride quality in both directions of Interstate 80 (I-80) from Madison Avenue to Roseville Road (Post Miles 9.6-12.9), along with on-ramps and off-ramp improvements for Madison Avenue.

    U.S. Highway 50 Fiber Optics Project

    This project proposes to install a fiber optic line along U.S. Highway 50 in Sacramento and El Dorado counties from Sunrise Boulevard to Silva Valley Parkway, hook up all existing Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) elements and signals to the fiber optic network running to the Regional Transportation Management Center (TMC) and to install a traffic camera at Carpenter Peak near the Sacramento-El Dorado County line.

    U.S. Highway 50 Pavement Rehabilitation Project

    The purpose of this project is to replace the existing Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavement, reduce maintenance crew’s exposure to live traffic, and reduce maintenance expenditure. The project scope also includes the restoration of other roadway elements such as drainage, lighting, and pedestrian facilities. The existing Portland PCC pavement was built between 1967 and 1971 and has reached the end of its service life. It is deteriorated and has a poor ride quality that requires annual maintenance to repair and maintain. A recent pavement condition survey conveyed that there is severe slab cracking and faulting in the no. 3 and 4 lanes in both directions and minor slab cracking in the no.1 and 2 lanes in both directions.

    Sacramento Connector Ramps Metering Project

    Install connector ramp meters at four locations in Sacramento County. The first location is the connector ramp from eastbound Route 160 to northbound Route 51 (Business 80), the second location is from southbound Route 99 to southbound Interstate 5 (I-5), the third location is from southbound I-5 to northbound Route 99, and the fourth location is from southbound Route 99 to northbound I-5.

    Tower Bridge - Night

    Tower Bridge Maintenance Project

    This is a HM315 project for mechanical and electrical rehabilitation on Tower Bridge, located in Yolo County on Route 275, PM 13.01. The work will upgrade the existing security/communications system, replace 48 incandescent lights with energy efficient LED lighting, replace the traveling cable system, conduct NDS testing and maintenance of the counter balance chains, and replace the 96 counterweight wire ropes, required to operate the bridge opening.
