District 3 - Project Map
Camino Safety Improvements
Near Placerville from Still Meadows Road to 0.1 mile east of Upper Carson Road. The project proposes to install a concrete median barrier, widen outside shoulders, and install several acceleration/deceleration lanes to decrease potential vehicle conflicts. In addition, a new undercrossing will be constructed to allow access between the north and south side of Highway 50.
Vertical Clearance for Permit Vehicles
This project proposes to raise six overcrossing (OC) structures and replace the roadway structural section beneath one underpass (UP) structure and two overcrossing (OC) structures to meet vertical clearance requirements for permit vehicles. The required minimum vertical clearance is 16 feet 6 inches. Currently most of the bridges identified have vertical clearances of 15 feet 6 inches or less.
Hwy 193 Newcastle Relignment
This realignment project project will improve the radius of the roadway curves, increase sight distance, add paved shoulder width, and provide clear recovery zones.
Sac 5 Road Rehabilitation Project
This comprehensive corridor project will rehabilitate Interstate 5 (I-5) in Sacramento County from Beach Lake Bridge at Morrison Creek (PM 13.0) to the American River Bridge (PM 24.9). This was a G13 SHOPP Contingency project programmed in the 18/19 Fiscal Year (FY). With the passage of SB1, this project has been accelerated to be delivered in 17/18 FY and go to construction in 2018.
The proposed work includes:
Hwy 49 Rehabilitation Project
This project proposes to rehabilitate the existing pavement. The proposed work includes: improving operational features, upgrading pedestrian facilities, replacing or relocating associated electrical facilities (including a new traffic signal), rehabilitating the existing drainage facilities, widening shoulders at designated places, and providing Class II bike lanes.
"Y" to Cascade Road
The project will collect and treat storm water runoff as part of the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program (EIP). The project is partially located within the City of South Lake Tahoe (CSLT) on Route 89 between the "Y" and Cascade Road. The first 1.1 miles of the project is a 4 lane conventional highway with a continuous two way left turn lane. The remainder of the project is a 2 lane conventional highway.
Emerald Bay Storm Water Quality Improvements and Pavement Rehabilitation
This project work includes storm water quality improvements, pavement rehabilitation from Cascade Road to north of Eagle Falls Viaduct.
State Route 16: Capay/Esparto Improvement - Collision Severity Reduction Project
In Capay, this project will benefit the travelers by improving the sight distance and providing a consistent shoulder width. In Esparto, this project will benefit users by improving pedestrian visibility, reducing the intersection crossing distance for pedestrians, upgrading pedestrian facilities to be in accordance with ADA requirements.
Meeks Bay Storm Water Quality Improvements and Pavement Rehabilitation

U.S. Highway 50 from "Y" Intersection with State Highway 89 to Trout Creek Bridge
The project will collect and treat stormwater runoff as part of the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program (EIP).
The project is located within the City of South Lake Tahoe (CSLT) on U.S. Highway 50 from the Upper Truckee River Bridge to Trout Creek Bridge.
Across the Top Bus/Carpool Lanes
The project will improve the mobility for motorists in the Sacramento region by constructing approximately 10 miles of east and westbound bus/carpool lanes, rehabilitating the pavement from West El Camino Avenue to Watt Avenue and adding one mile of auxiliary lanes in both directions of Interstate 80 from West El Camino Avenue to the Interstate 80/Interstate 5 interchange.
American River Bridge and Lagoon Creek Bridge Scour Repair
In Sacramento County, repair bridge scour at the American River Bridge on State Route 160 (Br No 24-001) and Lagoon Creek Bridge on State Route 99 (Br No 24-0045).
Bus/Carpool Lanes Phase 1
This project (Phase 1) will create approximately 18.8 miles of bus/carpool lanes on I-5 in the Sacramento area, from 0.7 miles north of South Reach Beach Lake Bridge 24-347 to Route 50. Phase 2 will be designed and constructed as a separate project at a later date and will construct approximately 6.8 miles of bus/carpool lanes from 0.2 mile south of Beach Lake Bridge 24-262 to 0.7 mile north of South Reach Beach Lake Bridge 24-347. One environmental document will cover the Phase 1 and Phase 2 project limits.
Placer Interstate 80-State Highway 65 Interchange Improvement Project
This project will focus on alieviating traffic congestion on the interchange between Interstate 80 and State Highway 65 in Placer county through the following improvements:
- Construct a third lane on northbound Highway 65 will be added from I-80 to Pleasant Grove Boulevard.
- Widen and modify the northbound and southbound ramps at the Highway 65/ Galleria Boulevard/Stanford Ranch Interchange by adding protected left turn pockets and signalizing the northbound off-ramp.
- Install ramp meters at the Highway 65/ Galleria Boulevard/Stanford Ranch Interchange. at the Highway 65/ Galleria Boulevard/Stanford Ranch Interchange.
Yolo 16 Safety Improvements
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is proposing a safety improvement project at three separate locations on State Route 16 in Yolo County between the I-505 interchange and Brooks.
Sac-99 Seismic Retrofit
Project is near Elk Grove and proposes to seismically retrofit five bridges: Dillard Road Overcrossing (OC) (Br No 24-0163 PM 7.36), Cosumnes River Overflow (Br No 24-0021R/L PM 7.92), and Cosumnes River (Br No 24-0020R/L PM 8.40).
Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project
The Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project (KBCCIP) is a $44 million initiative to revitalize Kings Beach through storm water management programs, fresh and new streetscape designs and traffic-calming measures. It includes State Highway 28 from Chipmunk Street to the junction with State Highway 267.
Please be advised this is a Caltrans oversight project with Placer County as the lead agency.
South Fork American River Bridge Replacement
This project will replace the South Fork American River Bridge to meet current seismic standards and provide a wider structure to include standard lanes and shoulders, and accommodate bicycles and pedestrians.
U.S. 50 HOV Lane (I-5 to Watt Ave)
In Sacramento on US 50, from I-5 to 0.8 mile east of Watt Avenue - Construct high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes [PM 0.2/R6.1]
Truck Climbing Lane near Colfax
Construct truck climbing lane and related improvements on eastbound I-80 near Colfax from Long Ravine Underpass to Alpine Overcrossing.
I-80 Bridge Rehabilitation Project
On Interstate 80 at 6 Locations between Weimar Overhead (Bridge No. 19-0038) and Cisco Overcrossing (Bridge No. 19-0118)
Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct
The project will replace or rehabilitate the Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct (Br#25-0044), which is located in El Dorado County 7 miles west of the City of South Lake Tahoe along U.S. Highway 50 near Echo Summit.
State Route 174 Relignment Project
The project proposes to realign several curves, widen shoulders, add a left-turn lane at Greenhorn Access Rd, and improve the Clear Recovery Zone (CRZ) on State Route (SR) 174 from post mile PM 2.7 to PM 4.6 in Nevada County, California
I-5 Riverfront Reconnection Project
The project includes construction of the 2nd Street and Capitol Mall Connector Bridge
providing at new entrance for cars, bicycles and pedestrians into Old Sacramento
from Capitol Mall at 2nd Street and Neasham Circle.
Please be advised this is a Caltrans oversight project with Sacramento City as the lead agency.
Project will remove and replace the existing wood fender system on the Tower Bridge,
(Sacramento River Bridge #22-0021) on State Route 275 in West Sacramento.
Rio Vista Bridge
The $37.1 million project will clean and paint the drawbridge on State Highway 12 over the Sacramento River in Rio Vista. Construction is scheduled to take three years.
There will be no full bridge closure. One of the walkways must be open to pedestrian-bicycle traffic around the clock.
This project proposes to make safety improvements to the existing T
intersection at U.S. Highway 50 and State Route 89 in Meyers.
The project proposes to improve safety and includes increased curve radii,
improved vertical profile grade, widen shoulders and improve the Clear Recovery Zone
Highway 99 Rehabilitation
The project proposes to rehabilitate pavement, improve drainage, streetscape and lighting and
upgrade sidewalks and crosswalks to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
El Dorado US Highway 50 Sand Traps
This project will install sand traps at multiple locations to collect traction sand and prevent it from entering
the American River. The addition of maintenance vehicle pullouts will for servicing the sand traps safely off the highway.
Highway 99 RHMA Overlay
This project will rehabilitate pavement and upgrade curb ramps where necessary in Sacramento County on State Route 99
near Galt from the San Joaquin County line to Simmerhorn Rd Overcrossing (Br. No. 24-0138) and in Sacramento County,
from 0.7 mile south of Elk Grove Blvd Overcrossing (Br. No. 24-0019) to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd Overcrossing (Br. No. 24-0147)
State Highway 70 Safety Improvement Project
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is proposing a safety improvement project on Highway 70 in Yuba County near Marysville between
Laurellen Road and the South Honcut Creek Bridge. There have been a higher number of fatal collisions along this section of highway compared to the statewide average,
qualifying these locations for safety improvements. The proposed improvements are expected to reduce the collision rates at these locations.
State Highway 20 Smartsville Project
The roadway no longer meets current 55-mph highway design standards and the existing alignment and shoulder widths no longer meet current highway design standards. By
bringing the roadway into compliance, we aim to reduce the number and severity of collisions along the route.
State Highway 20 Colusa Maintenance Project
Constructed in the 1950s, this one-mile stretch of State Highway 20 between Butte Vista Drive and Market Street requires extensive maintenance.
The pavement cross slopes no longer meet today’s highway standards. The drainage system needs improvements to avoid constant maintenance issues.
Some sections of the highway lack sidewalks for pedestrians.
State Route 70 Simmerly Slough Bridge Replacement
The Simmerly Slough Bridge on State Highway 70 north of Marysville no longer meets current design and seismic safety standards.
The bridge also is experience scouring activity in which water has been removing sediment such as sand and rocks from around the
bridge piers or abutments.
